The North and South American versions of Persona 4 Arena: Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold will be region-free. Presumably this means that North American players will be able to play versions of the game picked up from South America on their North American PlayStation 3 or Xbox 360. This is important considering Persona 4 Arena: The Ultimate in Mayonaka Arena turned out to be one of the few region-locked PlayStation 3 games.
Atlus offered no reasoning for the reveal but it should be noted that the publisher considered the P4A:U region-locking incident to be an isolated case. However P4A:U isn’t the only PlayStation 3 content that has been region-locked; Japanese players have been locked out from playing international versions of the GTA games before, and conversely international players were locked out from playing the Japanese demo for Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance.
It should be noted that P4A:U isn’t the only Persona game that’s been walled off. Persona 3 and 4 crossover Persona Q: Shadow of the Labyrinth for the 3DS (which we awarded a 7/10) is region-locked.
Persona 4 Arena Ultimax Ultra Suplex Hold has no official release date, but Atlus says to expect it sometime this fall.
However, we do know that Tohru Adachi and Rise Kujikawa from Persona 4 will be making a comeback. The game will also include numerous balance changes and minor alterations which will have big implications for high level players.
