Nintendo has announced that Mario Golf: World Tour on the 3DS will feature regional and worldwide online tournaments in preparation for its release on May 2. For a full schedule of events, expect updates on Nintendo’s official website.

Through SpotPass notifications, players can stay up to date with all Nintendo-hosted tournaments. These tournaments consist of more than standard golf: specific, small-scale events include longest-drive challenges, coin-gathering challenges, and speed golf.

The prizes for these tournaments are in-game coins that can be used to purchase gear in Toad’s Shop in Castle Club.

In addition, Nintendo is hard at work with Callaway Golf (a global manufacturer of golf gear) in hosting another series of special in-game tournaments, beginning on May 22. All participants in this tournament will receive in-game digital items courtesy of Callaway Golf, such as golf clubs and golf balls.

In addition to these tournaments, Nintendo has also implemented a strong multiplayer framework: players are free to create public and private communities with customizable rules and conditions.

Nintendo encourages players to try out the game via a downloadable demo available April 24 on Nintendo eShop.
