Oculus VR has announced that they have no plans to prevent interactive pornography from being created for the upcoming Rift headset.
In a report from variety, Oculus founder Palmer Luckey recently spoke at the Silicon Valley Virtual Reality Conference about the Rift being an “open platform”. When asked specifically about plans for the adult content, Luckey said that the company has no control over what software can run on it, effectively confirming the inevitability of virtual reality porn.
Confirmed earlier this month, the Oculus Rift is set for a commercial launch in “early 2016″. Since its debut on Kickstarter back in 2012, the headset has gone through a number of iterations. It’s currently on its second development kit - and is seen by many as one of the more innovative pieces of hardware peripherals within the past three years, even managing to attract former id Sofware boss and programming wunderkind John Carmack, who joined Oculus VR last year. With very little consumer availability for virtual headsets at the moment, Oculus VR is aiming to be one of the first companies to deliver a proper device suitable for gaming, alongside Sony’s Project Morpheus headset for PS4.
After being purchased by Facebook for $400m, Mark Zuckerberg praised the devices capabilities, and expressed fondness over the potential to make the world a “more open and connected” place. Discussing the use within the fields of both education and medicine, it was probably a wise move for Zuckerberg not to bring up the streaming service capabilities of PornHub.
