Rocket League, successor to the amazingly-titled Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars, has entered closed beta for the PlayStation 4, Nosgoth developer Psyonix has announced. You can check out some announcement screenshots below.

Rocket League is a sports-action soccer game for one to eight players with a rather striking twist: Instead of controlling athletes, players will take control of rocket-powered cars to smash a ball – and other cars – around the field. The game boasts “an advanced physics system to simulate realistic interactions between cars and the ball, where mass and momentum determine how hard balls and cars hit each other, creating a unique and visceral playing experience.”

The game will feature an offline Season Mode – which includes vehicle customization, unlockable items, and multiple arenas – alongside the more traditional online experience. There is also a heavy emphasis on the game’s ability to capture replays, allowing players to ” play with, stylize, and create the ultimate replay of entire games.”

Psyonix’s current claim to fame is Nosgoth, a game that our own Oliver Zimmerman wrote about in his Nosgoth Preview.

“It’s certainly not perfect, but despite initial doubts it’s starting to shape up into a fun offering that is likely to develop a dedicated fanbase,” Oli wrote. “When playing as the Humans, Nosgoth becomes a tense third-person shooter and survival game that relies heavily on teamwork… but when you’re playing as the vampires the game is transformed into a brutal parkour-toting hack-and-slash.”

Psyonix is giving away a limited number of beta invites for players in Europe and North America on a “first-come, first-serve basis”.
