Sony has removed the nipples of a female character and a brief glimpse of a penis (not the same character!) from the Japanese version of the PlayStation 4 exclusive The Order: 1886. Now that’s a sentence you don’t get to write every day.
Japanese gamers have published some rather strange screenshots showing the exposed breasts of a woman, with no nipples. Despite The Order: 1886 having been available for quite some time in Japan, the level of censorship in the Japanese version has only just come into the spotlight. A comparison video showing the precise differences between the censored and uncensored versions has been released by Youtube video blog Censored Gaming (again, this is NSFW!), in which we can see that all of the nudity has been cut out of the Japanese version (not surgically thankfully). You can view the video below.
Censorship in gaming has always been prevalent, so this isn’t anything particularly surprising. Depending on the audience and the region, developers may see fit (or be forced into) making changes to their game to make it more palatable for a particular market.
The Order: 1886 was released in Japan with an 18+ “Z” rating.
I wasn’t particularly enthused with Ready at Dawn’s debut title, awarding it a mediocre 5/10 when I reviewed it last month. “Ready At Dawn clearly put a lot of effort into their debut title: as a technical showcase it’s highly impressive, and it’s obvious that a lot of time was spent on developing the lore,” I wrote in my The Order: 1886 review, “But the overall feeling you’re left with after finishing The Order: 1886 is one of unfulfilled potential.”
Still, an avalanche of mixed reviews hasn’t stopped the game from selling like hot cakes - it quickly took the top spot on sales charts in a number of different countries, including the United Kingdom. It seems likely that we’ll end up with a sequel sooner or later, so hopefully Ready at Dawn can iron out the kinks and deliver a game that manages to live up to the hype.
