Nintendo releases Pokemon, Wii U, and Amiibo sales

Nintendo of America has released its sales data for some of its biggest product releases for 2014.

Pokémon Omega Ruby and Pokémon Alpha Sapphire (collectively refereed to as ORAS for simplicity’s sake) for the 3DS mark the latest release in Nintendo’s massively popular Pokémon franchise. In their first 10 days of sales in the US, ORAS sold nearly 1.5 million copies (by contrast, ORAS sales in Japan toped 1.5 million in just three days). The company reported that total Nintendo 3DS software sales spiked over 40% compared to November 2013. In addition to the latest Pokémon games, Smash Bros. for the 3DS was also a major contributor to the successful numbers. Smash Bros. actually leads as the best-selling portable game in the US, with sales approaching 1.5 million copies (remember, the ORAS numbers were combined).

In addition to the 3DS racking up some impressive numbers, Nintendo’s latest console, the Wii U, also had an impressive US performance over the past year. According to the sales numbers, Black Friday week spiked Wii U console sales to the highest it has ever been since the console’s release in November 2012 - news which will no doubt make the platform holder very happy indeed, as many had written off the Wii U as an expensive flop.

On the software side of things, Smash Bros. on the Wii U has sold over 700,000 units, which is “approximately equal” to the number of Amiibo sales. Link, Mario, and Pikachu are the most popular figures, while Nintendo has already confirmed that it always planed to discontinue certain Amiibos from the get go.

“We are extremely confident in our holiday proposition,” noted Nintendo of America’s EVP Scott Moffitt, “and look forward to closing this year and starting 2015 with a full head of steam.”

With Captain Toad Treasure Tracker releasing on the Wii U on December 5th in North America and in the EU in late January, and launches for Splatoon, Yoshi’s Woolly World, and Kirby and the Rainbow Curse scheduled for Wii U release in 2015, it doesn’t look like Nintendo’s increased momentum will slow down any time soon.
