Amiibo Touch & Play: Nintendo Classics Highlights free download on Wii U this week

Nintendo launches Amiibo Touch & Play: Nintendo Classics Highlights as a free download on Wii U this Thursday, April 30th.

The app will contain 3 minute demos of classic NES and SNES games that will be unlocked when you tap an Amiibo to the Wii U’s gamepad. These demos are unlocked at random - any Amiibo figure can unlock any trial version. Up to 10 “scenes” from each game are available to try.

Amiibo Touch and Play was announced for a May release in Europe during Nintendo’s most recent Direct broadcast. Its trial experiences are similar to to the selection available in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U’s Masterpieces mode, although expanded upon here to provide another experience that’s compatible with Amiibo.

After each trial comes to an end you’ll be able to play more by unlocking the full version, although you’ll have to pay for it on the Wii U eShop.

If you aren’t too familiar with this franchise, you can have it all explained to you in the completely non-cheesy, non-cringeworthy trailer below.
