Assassin’s Creed Unity has been a rocky experience since launch (so much so in fact that Ubisoft decided to give away free DLC as well as full games) and fans of the series have been looking to Ubisoft to fix the various issues for some time now. According to Ubisoft’s Live Updates page, the upcoming patch may be the one that silences the unsatisfied players. The game’s fourth major update should be released fairly soon, although no official launch date has been announced.
Patch 4 will deal with a number of issues. A few noteworthy promises include the apparent improvement to Unity’s overall framerate, fix a number of crashes and clear up various issues with the Unity companion app for mobile phones and tablets. A full list of bug fixes has yet to be released, but the publisher has outlined what it sees as its top priorities:
Game crashes after loading your save: We’re devoting a lot of attention to this one and we have a workaround (try taking your system offline and reload your save, you should be able to play offline). Most instances of this crash will be eliminated in Patch 4, but if you do still encounter this issue after the Patch is applied please file a Customer Support ticket to help us identify what your issue is so we can create a fix for it.
Error CE-34878-0: Similar to the crash mentioned above, the game freezes or crashes after loading your save. This particular error message is exclusive to PS4. This issue should be resolved in Patch 4.
Initiates legacy recognition issues: Many of these issues have been resolved, but we’ve noted that it could still take several days for all of your progress from past games to be fully updated. If after five days you still don’t see your progress accurately reflected on the site, please file a ticket with Customer Support so we can more closely examine this issue.
Companion App issues: We’ve just released a new patch for the Companion App, so be sure to update to release 1.04 if you have not already. This patch addresses the following issues:
Restoration of lost Premiums
Fixed synchronization issues for first-time users and at login
Fixed the “no assassin” issue in the tutorial
Fixed missions with 100% odds of success that could fail
Fixed an issue with lost progress-simply resync with the HD game and load your save, this will synchronize your online progression data.
Ubisoft has said that if you do come across any other bugs following Patch 4, you should report it to their customer support so that they can work on a solution. In the same update, they said they will release further details about how customers will be able to redeem their free game if they paid for the Season Pass “soon”. The Season Pass was removed from sale shortly following release amid the controversy about Unity‘s many technical problems. Whether or not any of the drastic action taken by the publisher since Unity’s release - a barrage of game updates, compensation for Season Pass purchasers, and a promise to rethink how it deals with the press, after criticism of a launch-day review embargo - remains to be seen. They’re no doubt hoping it will, and that damage caused to the reputation of the Assassin’s Creed series will be short-lived given that details have already been leaked of the next major game next year, supposedly to be titled Assassin’s Creed Victory.
