Frictional Games has released a short new teaser trailer for their upcoming sci-fi horror title, SOMA, which you can see above.
At only a minute or so long there isn’t much to see, but what is there is incredibly atmospheric. There’s some fancy lighting effects being shown off, a rather creepy voiceover and backing track, with a small snippet of gameplay.
Frictional, of course, developed the classic horror game Amnesia: The Dark Descent (The Chinese Room created its sequel, A Machine for Pigs). If SOMA manages to come anywhere near the pant-wetting terror of their last effort, then it might be time to invest in some new underwear.
The horror genre has been undergoing something of a quiet resurgence over the last year - the aforementioned A Machine for Pigs was a solid experience, while Outlast sent Daily Mail readers everywhere running in terror at the sight of it’s exquisitely-rendered male genitalia. And of course, towards the end of this year no-one will hear you scream as Creative Assembly unleash Alien: Isolation.
Not much is known of SOMA at this point, beyond the fact that it has a sci-fi setting and looks pretty impressive; but if anyone can pull off an atmospheric and downright terrifying gameplay experience, it’s Frictional.
We’ll continue to keep a close eye on this one as it goes further through development.
