After its initial announcement at E3 2014, the hype train for the new Crackdown, which we all assumed would be Crackdown 3, hit a fever pitch. Now that things have calmed down a bit ,Eurogamer reached out to Microsoft Studios Creative Director Ken Lobb, who clarified that that the latest installment in the Crackdown franchise would not be Crackdown 3, but would be more of a sequel to the first game.
“I don’t like X game number seven. It’s a good idea sometimes to have a game with a subtitle. But some games, and Crackdown is a perfect example, is it really 3? It is the future. This is a different place, long after the original game. But is it 2? Is it a different universe than 2? Yeah, it’s kinda a sequel to 1.
In other words, it looks like Microsoft Studios is acting as though Crackdown 2 never existed, meaning that the company has fully acknowledged the pitfalls of the second game, including its rushed and repetitive nature.
Rather, Lobb fully admits that the new Crackdown game will hearken back to the original.
When I first came to Microsoft they’d already signed Crackdown. I was like, perfect, I know Dave. So, we took a while and made Crackdown 1. Crackdown 2 we kinda rushed. Sorry. I liked it. It wasn’t Crackdown 1.
A fair assessment if there ever was one. Check back for more information on the new Crackdown title, which is certainly not Crackdown 3, and make sure to check out the E3 2014 trailer below.
