Neverwinter, the MMO from Perfect World Entertainment based on Dungeons & Dragons, is now available to download on Xbox One.
The Xbox One release includes all content from the PC version, all playable classes (including the Scourge Warlock), and the Tyranny of Dragons expansion. There’s an Xbox One launch trailer, which you can see below.
“Neverwinter represents Perfect World Entertainment and Cryptic’s entrance and dedication to the console market,” said Bryan Huang, CEO for Perfect World Entertainment. “Our development team has worked relentlessly to ensure that the Neverwinter experience lives up to console player’s expectations for a high-quality free-to-play MMORPG. We’re excited to welcome players to the Forgotten Realms and continue to build on their experience as we release updates throughout the year.”
The game will try to optimize the console experience by incorporating friends list integration and optimized controls. The game also features a “Foundry” mode, a “a dynamic toolset that provides you the game assets and a sandbox environment to create your own adventures.” Nothing was mentioned about the Foundry mode was being left out of the console release, so I can only assume that you’ll still be able to create and upload your own maps and dungeons.
I have to admit that I’ve not tried playing an MMO on a console before - DC Universe Online passed me by, and I still haven’t got around to trying out Final Fantasy XIV; but for the low, low price of $0, there’s nothing to lose by giving it a try. Hopefully the free-to-play price-tag will help Neverwinter get a good footing in the console marketplace; I’ll never sneeze at the ability to play a game that would normally be a PC-exclusive, especially if I don’t even have to pay for it.
Neverwinter first launched on PC back on June 20th, 2013. Despite mixed feedback from players and critics at the time, it’s managed to pick up a strong following and is doing quite well for itself. Although the game is free-to-play, you can pay real money to speed up your progress. In Neverwinter you’re able to explore famous locations from the tabletop RPG’s most-loved setting - the Forgotten Coast. Don’t mistake it for Neverwinter Nights though - it’s completely unrelated to the RPG that Bioware released on PC back in 2002.
