Mortal Kombat X gets Brutal

NetherRealm Studios has revealed that Brutalities are making a comeback in Mortal Kombat X.

The reveal came during a live gameplay stream on Twitch yesterday, in which the developer showed off some of the gruesome new moves. Over 100 Brutalities will make it into the final game, and if you though some of the Fatalities shown so far were gruesome, then you’re in for something of a shock. Fittingly, the new Brutality finishers are exactly what the name suggests - absolutely brutal. Of the moves shown so far, we’ve seen Raiden teleporting inside his opponent and bursting his way out, Kung Lao’s razord-edged hat slicing people in half, and Cassie Cage punching someone repeatedly in the face until their head is reduced to mush.

Brutalities are essentially uber-violent variants of traditional Fatalities, and first debuted in Mortal Kombat Trilogy back in 1996. They were the first variant on Fatalities, along with a large number of other variants which became increasingly absurd. Animalities saw fighters transform into animals, Babalities let your turn your opponent into a small baby, and Friendships let you become friends with enemies. So far, none of these other variants have been shown, so it’s not currently known whether Brutalities are the sole alternative to Fatatlities in Mortal Kombat X or not.

Here’s the video showing off the new moves:

Mortal Kombat X is currently set for release on April 14th for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One. Customers who preorder at specific retail outlets will be given access to preorder-exclusive fighter, Goro.
