Miyamoto: Splatoon was nearly a Mario game

In an interview with Edge magazine, Mario creator and development legend Shigeru Miyamoto has revealed that Mario was almost the lead character in Splatoon, Nintendo’s innovative, kid-friendly shooter for the Wii U.

“There were heated debates over who the main player character should be,” Miyamoto said. “Whether it should be Mario, or a squid. When we talked about the possibility of it being Mario, of course we could think of the advantages: anybody would be willing to touch it as soon as we announced that we had the new Mario game. But at the same time, we had some worries. If it were Mario, we wouldn’t be able to create any new IP.”

In the end, Nintendo seems to have taken the riskier option, creating a new gaming universe without one of the company’s storied hallmark characters to anchor it down.

Splatoon is a third-person shooter developed by Nintendo. Rather than aiming for the gritty territory of Call of Duty or Halo, Splatoon has players firing brightly colored blots of ink at one another. The player also has the ability to morph into a squid, which can then stealthily swim through the blots of ink the players team has splattered across the map. Check out the trailer below.
