The new Mirror’s Edge game, from Battlefield developer EA DICE, is scheduled for an early 2016 release on consoles and PC. The news was announced in EA’s quarterly financial earnings presentation, released last night.
Very little information about Mirror’s Edge 2 has been revealed so far. During EA’s 2014 E3 press conference, EA and DICE announced that the game would be a reboot chronicling how the game’s protagonist, Faith, becomes the woman she is in the original game. In a post on the Mirror’s Edge website, the game’s Senior Producer, Sara Jannson, stated what she and her team are striving to achieve with the game.
“We want to make sure we evolve the game and Faith in a way that gives you an exciting new player experience,” Jannson said. “We want the game to be accessible enough to embrace new players while at the same time reward the skilled player… the uniqueness of the Mirror’s Edge universe is still there, but with a new and fresh feel to it.”
Beyond these few snippets of information, there aren’t too many details about how the game will play or what the story will entail. Here’s hoping more will be revealed at EA’s presentation during E3 this year.
In our original Mirror’s Edge review, Nic Bunce gave the game a 6/10 and said of it that “All in all, Mirror’s Edge isn’t a bad game. It has some gorgeous art design and it takes some brave risks by experimenting with ideas that many lesser developers would be ill-equipped to realize, let alone succeed with. It’s an experiment which takes a leap of faith (all puns intended) but doesn’t achieve a perfect landing.”
Despite receiving lukewarm reviews from many critics however, the game has managed to pick up a strong following over the years, and its clinical aesthetic - which highlighted running lines in bold red set against the primarily white city backdrop - has arguably become iconic, its influence seen in many other recent and upcoming games such as Superhot.
