After Minecraft creator Markus ‘Notch’ Persson cancelled the game’s port to the Oculus Rift in March of this year, fans gave up on the idea of strolling through their Minecraft world in a first-person virtual reality.
Persson cancelled the project after Facebook acquired the virtual reality company. He states:
Facebook is not a game tech company. Facebook has a history of caring about building user numbers, and nothing but building user numbers. People have made games for Facebook platforms before, and while it worked great for a while, they were stuck in a very unfortunate position when Facebook eventually changed the platform to better fit the social experience they were trying to build.
It now appears that he’s over this fact, tweeting out a few days ago:
And about now I’m officially over being upset about Facebook buying Oculus. I’m upset about there being a hole in my favorite sock instead.

John Carmack, Chief Technology Officer at Oculus then responded with:
@notch @brendaniribe say the word, ship the source, and i’ll make sure It runs well on you-know-what… — John Carmack (@ID_AA_Carmack) August 17, 2024
Minecraft is one of the most successful indie games of all time, having sold nearly 54 million copies across eight platforms, with more platform ports currently in development. Will the Oculus Rift get its own port? Time will tell.
