Minecraft may have started out as a small independent game in 2009, but in less than 5 years it has gone on to sell more copies than Super Mario Brothers. Seeing an obvious opportunity ,Warner Brothers has reportedly gotten the rights to make a live action film based on the incredibly popular open-world building game.
Markus Persson (AKA Notch), Minecraft’s creator posted on twitter today”Someone is trying (to) leak the fact that we’re working with Warner Brothers on a potential Minecraft Movie, I wanted to be the leak!” Polygon was quick to contact Perrson about the tweet, and he had this to say; “It’s for real. I think every part of that tweet was real, including me wanting to be the one to spill the news about a potential movie”.
More and more video game franchises have been slated to hit the big screen in recent months, (Sly Cooper, Ratchet And Clank, and Angry Birds to name a few) so it only makes sense for Warner Bros to nab the rights to one of the most popular games of recent times. It remains to be seen if this new trend in movies will mirror the unexpected success of superhero movies, or just be a repeat of the nightmarish wasteland that was the early 1990s.
