Monolith Productions’ Action-RPG Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor has been on our radar for some time. It promises a living ecosystem and chain of command for Orc troops. A system where, in theory, confronting an Orc commander may well come back to haunt you. A new video, that goes behind the scenes with Cinematic Director Christian Cantamessa and actor Troy Baker, shows off some of the mo-cap (for both human and non-human characters) tech being used to capture live-action performances and re-render them in the game.

There are some interesting takeaways from the video. Troy Baker, who has played everyone from InFamous: Second Son’s Delsin Rowe to The Last of Us’s Joel, will be playing the role of protagonist Talion in the upcoming game. He notes “There’s not one scene in this game that is superfulous, everything is incredibly purposeful. And if it wasn’t, it got cut”. Cantamessa also chimed in re-affirming that the game will be “bridging a gap between the story of The Hobbit and the story of The Lord of the Rings“.

We know that the story will follow Talion’s post-humous exploits after he is revived by a Wraith. In one scene in the video Talion downs an enemy simply by grabbing his skull. His arm glows, suggesting this may be one of the Wraith abilities.

Middle-earth: Shadow of Mordor is slated for release later this year on Oct. 7, and will be available on PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360, and Xbox One.
