Microsoft has come up with a clever way of getting consumers to cross the brand divide: offering a discount on a new Xbox One if you trade in your PlayStation 3.
The news was posted on games forum NeoGAF after the offer landed in a user’s email inbox. The limited time offer allows customers to visit a Microsoft store in the USA, bring in a working PS3 in good condition and leave with a shiny new Xbox One for $100 dollars less than the usual retail price. According to the advert, in order to qualify for the offer the PS3 being traded in must not be password protected, must come with all the original chargers and accessories and must be “without broken/missing components, cracked display/housing, or liquid damage”.
This discount effectively means an Xbox One would work out at the same price as a new PS4, thereby removing one of the key selling features that the PS4 has used to propel sales. While Microsoft retail stores are not anywhere near as common on the streets of America as other electronics retailers, there is a big enough presence to suggest that this could help shift a few more Xbox One units and possibly even switch some people’s allegiances away from PlayStation. An undoubtedly smart move on their part.
