Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be release on September 1st, 2015 for PC, PS3, PS4, Xbox 360 and Xbox One.

The news comes after an industrious member of popular gaming forum NEOGAF spotted unpublished articles on IGN.com’s servers. A little bit of digging later, and voila! Release date confirmed.

For the last couple of days, the official website for MGSV has been displaying a countdown timer, which isn’t due to expire until tomorrow. However with the cat now out of the bag, we no longer have to wait for the counter to hit zero before we can report the oficial release date. Thanks, NEOGAF.

In Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, players don’t control the legendary spy Solid Snake. Instead, you’ll be playing as Big Boss - the former-spy-turned-great-big-bad-guy and whose DNA served as the template for Snake’s own. Snake himself, of course, croaked it at the end of Metal Gear Solid 4 on PS3, which came out back in 2008. MGSV is a prequel, taking place roughly 20 years prior to the original Metal Gear and serves as a direct sequel to Metal Gear Solid 4 - which also starred Big Boss in the lead role - and the PSP strategy titles Metal Gear Solid: Portable Ops.

MGSV was originally announced in 2011, after months of speculation - during which Kojima pulled one of his trademark stunts and tried to pretend it was a completely new game called simply The Phantom Pain.

Kojima, long known for being somewhat eccentric, has stated that Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain will be his last game in the series - though he’s made that claim more than once in the past.

Metal Gear Solid V diverges from previous installments by being set in a largely open world - though certain missions will be walled off and contained within specific areas. As well as the single-player game - which reportedly features a game world significantly larget than previous games in the stealth-em-up series, MGSV: The Phantom Pain will also ship with the latest version of Metal Gear Online.

The most recent installment in the series is last year’s Ground Zeroes, which serves as a taster of what we can expect from the final full game. Ground Zeroes also serves to lay down some of the narrative threads that Kojima is looking to explore in this latest game.

Unsurprisingly, we can expect a heavy preoccupation with themes of war, private militaries, and the authority of government - pretty much par for the course then, for Kojima.

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is being developer using Kojima Production’s proprietary FOX Engine, which is said to allow for near-photorealistic graphics. The last time we saw the engine in action for ourselves was with P.T. - which turned out to be a playable teaser for an upcoming new Silent Hill game, which Kohima is making in collaboration with acclaimed film director Guillermo del Toro.
