Metal Gear Solid V Is Getting Microtransactions

Big Boss from the Phantom Pain

The saga of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is a long, spiraling, and convoluted one. A once certain and solid title has been lost in a whirlpool of losing Kojima, Konami pushing for mobile, and pulling themselves from the NYSE. As a result, the future for Konami has been in a constant state of flux. It seems the final creation of Kojima hasn’t escaped unscathed either, as the PlayStation preorder page for The Phantom Pain has one dreaded line of text in the game description: “In-game purchases optional.”

Although this doesn’t explicitly guarantee there will be major microtransactions in-game, there’s still a very relevant fear that aspects of the game will be locked behind long waits or deep pockets for the financial benefit of Konami’s last hurrah into the console gaming market. Although based on what we saw in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zero, it will likely still be good.

Opinion: Although microtransactions have appeared before in full-priced, big budget games from major developers before, it’s still disconcerting to see the practice in such a big title. For many players, this will be the last Metal Gear Solid game they’ll want to play, since Kojima is no longer on-board, and having that last foray into the world sullied by the potential need for premium currency or more spending actually takes away from what could be the last, best Metal Gear Solid experience.
