Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes - Exclusive missions for all

Japanese videogame news outlets have reported that the platform exclusive missions in Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes will no longer be exclusive as of May 1. The Xbox-exclusive “Jamais Vu” mission will be will be made available for PlayStation platforms, and the PlayStation-exclusive “Déjà vu” mission will made available for Xbox platforms as a free download.

The terms Déjà vu’ and Jamais vu are French antonyms: the former refers to the sensation of extra familiarity with something seen or experienced, whereas the latter refers to a heightened sense of unfamiliarity. The terms are quite fitting, given the content of the missions.

The Déjà vu mission involves guiding a blocky version of stealth expert protagonist Snake - true to his depiction in the original 1998 release of Metal Gear Solid for the PlayStation - through the contrastingly photo-realistic military camp that Ground Zeroes takes place in. Players will reenact scenes eerily similar to those from the original Metal Gear Solid.

The Jamais vu mission, on the other hand, features a mash-up that might make fans of creator Hideo Kojima’s work do a double-take. The mission places players in the cyborg leg-restraints of secondary Metal Gear Solid protagonist Raiden (a character with a chequered fan reception) as he fights off the mysterious Snatchers. The Snatchers are a key part of a Kojima’s cyberpunk visual-novel thriller Snatcher - one of the few non-Metal Gear Solid Kojima games fortunate enough to see localization.

Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes has been positioned by publisher Konami as stop-gap episode that fills in the events between Metal Gear Solid: Peace Walker and Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain. At the moment, Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain has no firm release date.
