Indie developer Lucas Pope has released a sneak peek of his next game Return of the Obra Dinn.
The game is set in 1802 where the titular merchant vessel - the Obra Dinn - has set out from London for the Orient. Six months go by and no-one has seen hide nor hair of the ship, making the presumption that she is lost at sea; however, eight years later, the ship mysteriously returns to the London harbor where it began her journey, but she is damaged and with no crew. The player assumes the role of an insurance adjuster for the East India Company’s London Office, where they find themselves caught in the middle of the nautical mystery.
The game uses of the print style - commonplace in London - to create a unique design. That allows the game to truly stand out from the crowd and lets the player become fully immersed in the world of the Obra Dinn.
Upon releasing the demo, Pope warned: “This is a very early playable build. There’s not much content and it hasn’t been tested. Progress is not saved.”
Lucas Pope is an indie developer best known for the game Papers, Please, an award-winning puzzle game which finds the player working as an immigration officer in the fictional dystopian country of Arstotzka. Those of you who have used Chicago O’Hare will especially relate.
Pope has met with critical acclaim as an indie game developer, winning the ‘Excellence in Narrative’ and ‘Excellence in Design’ award at the 2014 Independent Games Festival. He also received a nomination for the prized Nuova Award and to date, Papers, Please has sold around 500,000 copies - not bad at all for a game about stamping passports.

It’s inimitable and the closest you’ll get to the grey dullness and tedium in real life is actually working for the Transportation Security Administration in America.”
