Keiji Inafune, creator of Mega Man and the upcoming Mighty No. 9, has started another Kickstarter campaign: this time for RED ASH - The Indelible Legend.
Inafune says in his Kickstarter pitch video that his goal with RED ASH is to “[create] a game that captures the feeling of freely exploring an anime world.” He goes on to say that “I believe we were a little ahead of our time when we first attempted this concept. Unfortunately, the project did not see the success or conclusion it deserved.”
Inafune’s quote makes it sound very much like RED ASH is going to be a spiritual successor to Mega Man Legends, reviving the ill-fated series in the same way that Mighty No. 9 is a spiritual successor to the traditional Mega Man games.
The most interesting part of the Kickstarter is that an anime will be developed alongside RED ASH. The two projects are “based in separate, yet parallel worlds, giving creators on both sides full freedom to create whatever story or world they want.”
Depending on how well and how cooperatively both of the projects develop, it could be fun to watch a series, become familiar with the world, and then have the freedom to run around in it in a totally separate quest. It’s a proposition that’s just intriguing enough for me to forget that I’m still waiting for Mighty No. 9 to release.
It’s hard to say whether it’s good news that Inafune has already started another Kickstarter project with RED ASH – is it indicative that Comcept will be rolling out games one after another, with consistent quality, or is the company just trying to ride out the success that it saw with Mighty No. 9? It would be easier to say if Mighty No. 9 was already officially released.
Either way, it’s hard not to be excited about another Not-Mega Man project - regardless of the timing.
RED ASH - The Indelible Legend is currently at $283,064 out of its $800,000 goal. Should the campaign reach its target, a prologue (named The KalKanon Incident) will be created to act as a jumping-off point for three future planned episodes. Regarding any future episodes, Inafune says on the Kickstarter page that “Whether it’s through additional funding, revenue from The KalKanon Incident sales, or teaming up with a publisher, this is a story we are determined to tell, and we want all of our backers to be on the ground floor for the creation of this new game universe.”
Plans to continue development for RED ASH with or without massive stretch goals being met is a refreshing policy. Hopefully everything goes well and we’ll get more information about the current and future plans for the game very soon.
