Jagex, the developers behind the vastly popular MMO RuneScape, have announced today that development on a brand new game set in the RuneScape universe - Gielinor is underway. Chronicle: RuneScape Legends (which is the working title at the moment) is set to launch sometime in 2015 on various devices ranging from PC, Mac, tablets and other mobile platforms. Chronicle: RuneScape Legends is a collectible card game that plays out inside the pages of a living book and focuses primarily on quest building - this apparently means that players will be allowed to craft their own miniature RPGs that feature classic RuneScape enemies and bosses. After players get the gist of quest building they can move onto what Jagex calls “tense PvP combat”.

Chronicle: RuneScape Legends was initially revealed at RuneFest on the 11th of October in London where the lead designer, James Sweatman, hosted the grand reveal and said that, “We’ve been quietly developing Chronicle: RuneScape Legends since the start of the year to ensure that it’s not only a fun and compelling player experience, but one still very much interwoven into the rich lore of RuneScape. We’re looking forward to sharing more information on the game over the coming months, especially in regards to Chronicle’s debut on tablet and mobile!”

RuneScape has been the foundation for Jagex’s success for more than 13 years”, said Phil Mansell, vice president of RuneScape. “it’s exciting to broaden the brand’s appeal with the compelling quest building gameplay offered by Chronicle. Chronicle: RuneScape Legends represents an important step for Jagex as we add a new game into the RuneScape family. This announcement tops a strong 2014 where our flagship title has continued to thrive.”

While this is great news and we wish the best of luck to the team at Jagex, no-one can deny the fact that they are going up against some stiff competition what with Blizzard’s hugely popular Hearthstone, Magic - Duels of the Planeswalkers and a host of other smaller and equally as promising collectible card games. They obviously feel like they are on to something and I’m interested to see how this turns out. Only time will tell really - but I have my fingers crossed.
