Fans of the horror genre are certainly to be familiar with Jason Vorhees, the hockey-mask-wearing serial killer from notorious slasher film series Friday the 13th. Crystal Lake Entertainment, owners of the franchise and media company behind the films, has announced an upcoming multiplatform, multiplayer game to be released to accompany the upcoming Friday the 13th film (yes, another one) and television series.

Imaginatively titled Friday the 13th, the game is going to to be an asymmetrical survival horror game, where a group of survivor players must cooperate to survive against a single player in control of the iconic antagonist. CEO of Crystal Lake Entertainment, and director of the original 1980 film, Sean S. Cunningham said “With a new television series on the horizon and plans announced for the thirteenth installment of the film franchise, we felt the timing was right to finally explore Jason, Camp Crystal Lake, and the rest of the Friday the 13th story in interactive form. We have some exciting new ideas for a game that supplies plenty of replay value, while delivering the kinds of thrills and scares that fans of the franchise have come to expect.”

The announcement was a little light on detail, without even a developer announced. But according to EGM, an experienced developer has taken on the game, who will be announced in the coming weeks.

Horror games that give players a hand in being the monster and giving groups the chance to determine the pace sounds like a winning combination. Something similar can be seen in Turtle Rock’s upcoming Evolve. Player balance seems like it could be a harrowing tightrope to walk, but the idea is exciting enough to whet the appetite. Players looking forward to playing the killer in a survival horror game can look forward to more information on Friday the 13th in the next few weeks.
