Crytek has announced that it’s to bring a sequel to 2009 FPS game Homefront.
Dubbed The Revolution, the new title is being developed by Crytek’s Nottingham, UK studio in Cryengine, while publishing duties will be handled by Deep Silver.
The original game, created by the now-defunct studio Kaos didn’t fare too well, and was met with mixed reviews upon its original release - although it did go on to sell over a million copies.
Crytek is taking the series in a completely new direction that’s a world apart from the original. Rather than taking place over a series of linear levels, The Revolution will present players with a vast, free-roaming recreation of the state of Philadelphia, in a future where America has been overrun following an invasion by North Korea. Now a Police State, the Koreans ruthlessly crack down on any dissent, and it will be your job to engage in guerilla warfare on the streets in an effort to repel your new overlords. You’ll also be able to recruit others to your cause, as well as craft improvised weaponry to assist you in your fight.
Aside from the single-player campaign, up to four players will be able to band together a form a Resistance Cell, working together to undermine the new regime, though there’s no further details.
“Homefront: The Revolution stands out from the crowd by immersing players in a world where they’ll feel emotionally compelled to fight for their freedom,” said Hasit Zala, Game Director at Crytek. “We’re very excited to work with Deep Silver and deliver an experience that underlines Crytek’s commitment to quality whilst tapping into the huge potential we saw when we first acquired the Homefront IP.”
There’s also a spanking new announcement trailer, which you can watch below, and a number of screenshots for you to pore over. You can be sure that we’ll be keeping a close eye on this one.
Homefront: The Revolution due to be released sometime next year, for PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Windows PC, Mac and Linux.
