The success of Rockstar’s GTA V seems to know no bounds, with sales of physical copies passing the 5 million milestone in the UK (these official figures come from Chart-Track and don’t include download sales).
GTA V is actually one of the most successful games of all time, making $1 billion after just three days of its release. This secured it as the fastest selling entertainment product in history. As of the 31st of December, GTA V had shipped 45 million copies worldwide.
The global success of GTA V is now being reflected in the UK. Its release on PS4 and Xbox One in November secured it as the highest selling UK game of all time, taking the title from Call of Duty: Black Ops. It was already the fastest selling UK game of all time, selling 2.25 million copies in five days, breaking the record of Call of Duty: Black Ops again, which only sold 2 million copies in the same period.
The total sales of GTA V are actually much more impressive than the figures shown here, with the recent release of the game on PC, sales of downloadable copies will have sky-rocketed.
The UK weekly sales chart as a whole shows the success of Slightly Mad Studios’ Project Cars (keep an eye out for our upcoming review) and Wolfenstein: The Old Blood, holding the number 1 and 2 spots respectively.
