Those of you who’ve been finding Gods Will Be Watching to be just a little too unforgiving will be able to rest easy as developer Deconstructeam has released the free Mercy Update for the game on Steam, GOG, and Humble.
Stating that they have been listening to fan feedback, many of whom had complained that there was too much chance in the game, Deconstructeam has decided to add in a few options to tweak the difficulty to the players liking. Through the new “challenge settings”, players can choose from three different modes: Original Mode, Puzzle Mode, and Narrative Mode. The Original Mode of course keeps the game intact and plays exactly as the developer intended, wihile Puzzle Mode removes all elements of chance but still retaining a reasonable level of difficulty. Finally, the Narrative Mode is a simple story driven experience that only contains “minimal obstacles” preventing a full completion of the game. There is also a new option to change or remove past decisions made in earlier chapters to ease the latter half of the game.
“The team is very happy with the release of Gods Will Be Watching and the reception of the intense challenge we set out to deliver, but we’ve also been listening carefully to all the feedback, and we want to make the game as accessible as possible to every kind of player”, said Deconstructeam designer Jordi de Paco when asked to explain the new modes in a press release. “The Mercy Update is the result of our team’s discussions with both fans and critics, refining the game and creating new settings that allow more gamers to experience Gods Will Be Watching at a comfortable challenge level.“
While it is great to see that the game is more accessible to players of different skill levels, part of the charm of Gods Will Be Watching is its brutally unforgiving nature. Forcing players to make tough decisions while under the gun is really the most compelling part of the experience, and it will be interesting to see how the game plays out in the new modes. Maybe it was too difficult, but it certainly wasn’t impossible to beat, but hopefully now more players have the willpower to stick to the original settings.
