Gears of War Remaster Coming to Xbox One

Gears of War is being remastered, sources say

The first Gears of War game is making its way to Xbox One in a new remastered edition, it’s been revealed.

Sources close to the game spoke to Polygon, saying that the remastered version will feature updated cutscenes, as well as improved lighting and textures. The project is supposedly being headed by Brink developer Splash Damage, who recently posted several job listings indicating that they are working on a “very well known and highly popular AAA title with next gen technology.”

Polygon says it has seen several screenshots of the remaster, though it didn’t post the images. However, the site did report that on top of the improved lighting and textures, the multiplayer portion of the game will run at 60 frames per second. Reports have also surfaced that a test build has been sent to some American gamers via an invite on Xbox Live. But screenshots of the invitation make no mention of Splash Damage, instead crediting Black Tusk.

Invitees say that the test build contains just the first game in the series, and only features multiplayer modes. Team Deathmatch; King of the Hill; 1 Life 1V1 Shotgun TDM; 1v1 Sudden Death Gnashers Only; 4v4 TDM Single Round; and 4v4 KOTH Single Round are all playable, according to a report by Kotaku.

The first Gears of War title was released in 2006 for Xbox 360, and has since sold over 22 million units and earned more than $1 billion in revenue. Could Microsoft be planning to release the remaster in order to coincide with the ten-year anniversary of the original game next year? It’s certainly possible: after all, the platform holder has form, with both Halo Anniversary and the Halo 2 remaster - as part of last year’s Master Chief Collection - timed to coincide with the anniversary of the originals’ release.

Although it was previously thought that the first three Gears of War games would be getting their own remastered editions in a project called the Marcus Fenix Collection, Black Tusk studio manager Rod Fergusson downplayed the rumors in comments made last year. “I love the passion, but there’s no Marcus Fenix Collection,” Fergusson said last March. But these latest reports make it clear that something is going on.

We’ll find out at E3 in June, when Black Tusk and the future of Gears of War are likely to form one of the central pillars of Microsoft’s conference.
