Gamescom 2014: New Destiny screenshots revealed

New screenshots of Destiny‘s multiplayer PvP modes have been released by Bungie during Gamescom.

The new shots show off some of the environments that weren’t present in the Beta, as well as some of the armor customization options you’ll be able to unlock to make your avatar stand out from the pack. You can check out the new screenshots below.

Just in case you’ve been living under a rock, Destiny is Bungie’s first original IP in over a decade. Since the release of Halo: Combat Evolved back in 2001, the developer focused exclusively on furthering the lore of that universe. Since breaking away from Microsoft after Halo: Reach, they struck out on their own before entering into a 10-year-long publishing deal with Activision.

Destiny retains many of the developer’s trademarks: weighty movement, a two-weapon limit, sci-fi setting and an emphasis on science fiction and conflict against an alien race; but it also sees the developer expanding on the multiplayer first-person experience that they helped to pioneer - first with Marathon, and then later with Halo. Indeed, for many years, Microsoft’s entire multiplayer Matchmaking service on Xbox Live was built around algorithms developed by Bungie itself. Now they’re attempting to raise the bar again, building Destiny from the beginning as a multiplayer-focused experience with every level designed to accommodate groups of players and with an MMO hub-style area where you can purchase, sell and customize loot, as well as turn in and pick up quests. Just don’t call it a MMO - Bungie doesn’t like that, not one bit (though it really is an MMO. We love you Bungie, but c’mon…)

For more on Destiny and how it’s shaping up, check out our recent hands-on preview. “I don’t care how much like a previous Bungie title it feels,” our own bearded angel Kyle said, “because Destiny was an absolute blast.”

Destiny will be available on Xbox One, PS4, Xbox 360 and PS3 on September 9, 2014. It was announced at Gamescom this year that it’s actually broken the record for the most preorders of a new IP in the history of he medium. Over 3.6 million people played the beta, apparently.

In the meantime, here’s the latest screenshots for you to salivate over. I rather like that last one with the sand dunes and the moon shining against a bright blue sky.
