Planetary Annihilation, the successfully-Kickstarted but incomplete RTS from developer Uber Entertainment, was spotted at a retail outlet and posted on Reddit today, igniting a debate about where, when and how games should be sold both in physical retail and as digital media.
In a bid to understand exactly why an unfinished game would be sold at retail, Game Informer reached out to Uber Entertainment, and asked just that.
Their response?
“The real question is, why not?” asked Jan Mavor, one of the game’s directors. “After all, they are getting the same game, just earlier. It’s a changing world and we hope to continue trying out new and innovative ways to make games.”
While it’s a bit questionable to see an unfinished game in retail, Planetary Annihilation is a bit further along than an alpha or beta, and is in a seemingly made-up “gamma” stage of development, meaning that it has moved a bit beyond what we typically consider Early Access. While it does ultimately upgrade to the complete game upon release, and is not a rip-off in that respect, it’s hard to discern whether this a true response to a “changing world” or just a cynical cash grab.
