Gotham City’s masked crusader got a new look today, when Square Enix revealed the design of a new collectible action figure by Tetsuya Nomura. The Japanese artist is best known for his character designs for Final Fantasy, and for leading the development of the Kingdom Hearts series.
Nomura’s re-imagining of Batman’s costume seems to stand in stark contrast with the more-utilitarian combat-suit worn by Bruce Wayne in the Chris Nolan-helmed Dark Knight trilogy. Whether you like Nomura’s take on the playboy-vigilante or not, the figure is undoubtedly striking, and will certainly provoke some interesting reactions from fans. We rather like it, in a Gundam meets Batman via Final Fantasy of way.
Square Enix Products, which produces merchandise for the company’s videogame series’, has worked with DC and Warner Brothers (who own the rights to the Batman franchise and films) before on their Variant Play Arts figures.
The figure’s price and release date are still to be determined, but if you happen to be attending San Diego Comic-Con, you can see a prototype of Nomura’s Batman on display at the Square Enix booth.
