Yesterday, we reported how Square Enix had accidentally let slip that Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster would be coming to PlayStation 4, via a listing on its French online store. When asked about the listing, a representative for the company told us that they were “looking into it.”

Now, the Japanese publisher has officially confirmed the games’ existence.

Senior Vice President, Shinji Hashimoto, apparently confirmed the existence of the game at the PlayStation Experience event in Las Vegas last week, though the announcement was kept under wraps. Now, following on from the leak on the official French store, it seems the publisher has decided to let the moogle out of the bag and make it official. The remaster was previously published on PS3 and PS Vita earlier this year as a double-pack. In Japan, the games were released separately. We have reviews based on the Japanese version of both Final Fantasy X and Final Fantasy X-2.

Apparently, the PS4 version of the games will come with “system-exclusive features”, though the announcement makes no mention of what those might be. We’ve asked the publisher for more details, and will update this article if we hear back from them. The press release goes on to say that the decision was made to coincide with the PlayStation brand’s 20th anniversary.

Final Fantasy X is one of the most beloved entries in the long-running RPG series. As Tidus, players are tasked with protecting a young spirit summoner Yuna, as she aims to protect the world of Spira against the seemingly-unstoppable path of detruction waged by an ancient being called Sin. The game mixed things up by introducing a bit more depth to the leveling process with the Sphere Grid - dozens of inter-connected nodes which characters could unlock upon levelling up, introducing a new level of freedom to the strictly-linear levelling-up process of previous titles. Final Fantasy X-2, meanwhile, was the first direct sequel to a Final Fantasy game that Square Enix ever made, following Yuna and a posse of female fighters as they sought to uncover the truth behind Tidus’ disappearance. X-2 featured a mechanic whereby characters could change their costumes, gaining new abilities and changing their stats - sort of like a super-powered version of cosplay.

Final Fantasy X/X-2 HD Remaster will be released on PlayStation 4 next Spring for all territories.
