A group of fans have taken to Kickstarter to fund an unlicensed Legend of Zelda animated series.

Aeipathy Industries started the Kickstarter project in an attempt to start making an animated series based off on SNES classic Link to the Past full-time. They’re currently sitting at $5,587 of their $24,000 goal, and as of yet there are no cease and desists from Nintendo in sight.

Given their previous history when it comes to people profiting from its IPs, it’s likely that Nintendo is too busy dealing with the tragic death of its President, Satoru Iwata, who passed away earlier this week after a long battle with bowel cancer.

Michael Patch, lead animator of the project (named Zeldamotion: A Link to the Past), seems well aware that the project toes the lines of legality, but defends the Kickstarter. “This is purely a fan project,” he explains in his pitch. “Nothing will ever be sold. Fans have been trying to send us money (donate) for years, to help move things faster, and this is the most efficient way to do so.”

In response to the possibility of being forced to cease their project, Patch writes “We have contacted [Nintendo] a few times. . . and are ready to respectfully respond to whatever they say.”

Legal issues aside, the group at least already has a product to show, with the first video of the series up on YouTube. Not being a fan of video-games-turned-television (or even anime in general) I can’t offer a fair opinion of its quality, but I can say that the voice-acting is surprisingly decent – featuring Todd Haberkorn (Natsu Dragneel – Fairy Tale) as the voice of Link, Vic Mignogna (Edward Elric – Fullmetal Alchemist) as the voice of the villain Agahnim, and Kent Williams (Kenichi – The Mightiest Disciple) as Link’s uncle Alfon.

Time will tell whether the Kickstarter campaign will be another Nintendo-based project that is quickly squashed, or be an interesting series that Zelda fans will enjoy.
