Hold on to your hats: It’s finally happening!
In approximately 22 hours, Bethesda will officially announce the existence of the long-awaited Fallout 4. Anyone visiting this Bethesda Fallout website will find a countdown which ends at 3pm British time tomorrow (10am Eastern/ 9am Central).
A dig around the site’s source code throws up something interesting: an error message in the event that the site goes down.
Masterbrain was a unique Robobrain in control of all security at Vault-Tec HQ in Fallout 3. He appeared in just one mission: Agatha’s Quest, in which the Vault Dweller needs to achieve Agatha’s violin. Upon completing the quest, players can tune in to Agathat’s radio signal on their Pipboy, which leads to a number of suitably mournful melodies befitting your time in the post-apocalyptic wasteland of Washington DC.
In addition to this error message, a search through the Google Tag Manager source code for the site throws up clear references to Fallout 4, Xbox One and PlayStation 4, as well as a mention of preorder deals (none of which are any great surprise, but this is at least confirmation).
The sudden arrival of Fallout news couldn’t have come at a more interesting time, seemingly in anticipation of Bestheda’s upcoming E3 show later this month. Although we’ve had a little information about Fallout from decently reliable, aside from the reappearance of Three Dog and some suggestion of the Fallout 4 opening cinematic.
Full details on Fallout 4 will likely be given at Bethesda’s first E3 conference. It’s a pretty safe bet that this countdown will simply lead to an official announcement and most likely a teaser trailer. So far, all the speculation seems to suggest the game will be set in the Boston region of America, with the Commonwealth and former MIT building having been mentioned as prominent in-game locations.
The site is registered to Bethesda and features all the usual copyright notices and company logos you’d expect to find on an official website, so at least this time we know the site is genuine. In the past, there have been several hoaxes from fans, including one which was a deliberate attempt to try to force Bethesda into announcing the game.
