Have you ever had a dream where you could walk up to a random stranger in the street and challenge them to a card battle?
I have. This dream started with Final Fantasy VIII, and it lives strong to this day. Triple Triad was my favorite thing about that game - in fact, like Blitzball in Final Fantasy X, I used to boot up my PlayStation just to play Triple Triad against the same old enemies. I’ve been waiting with bated breath for Square Enix to release a standalone version that I can play on my phone or tablet. I want to challenge my friends to a card game, and I want to destroy them with my superior cards.
It seems that Aeterna Games had a similar dream and are using Triple Triad as inspiration for their new game, Eminence: Xander’s Tales. You can even go and back it (and you really should) on Kickstarter right now.
Eminence: Xander’s Tales is a MMORPG TCG/CCG, which is a lot of letters, to say the very least. At time of writing, the Kickstarter campaign has raised almost £34,000 of its 50,000 target with just less than a week to go.
In this world you play a knight, Xander, who is on a quest through the three kingdoms of Artalys. You must fight your way through a world where every encounter is fought out by playing a card game against your enemy. As you win you acquire one of their cards, as you lose you risk losing one of yours. This high-risk way of battling is truly engaging, and we are very excited to see where this game goes, should it get funded.
What we are even more excited about is that not only can you play PvP with your friends, but you can do it no matter what console or device they use - and the supported systems list is extensive. On top of this, if you want to pick put down your phone and carry on your iPad, there is literally nothing to stop you. Eminence: Xander’s Tales is about as accessible as they come, and it’s even gorgeous to boot.
Not only can you collect hundreds of beautifully-designed cards, but you can trade them with your friends, or simply battle them and steal their cards. You can even unlock exclusive cards from story-based quests as you battle your way through the game.
In true MMORPG fashion, you can even create and design your own character to flaunt around the world as you steal cards and break hearts. If you want to run around with your friends as a pack, there is even a guild system where you can battle co-operatively against other teams. All in all, Aeterna Games are promising a truly awesome experience.
Taking a look through the Kickstarter page, you’ll see that there will be micro-transactions in the game, but don’t worry. Aeterna Games proudly displays a banner on their page saying that Eminence is not a Play to Win game, and never will be; having spoken to the developers at the studio, they seem to hate the idea just as much as we do - and that’s a lot.
Go take a look at the highly detailed Kickstarter page and see what you think. Personally, between the gorgeous artwork and the promise of high-stakes CCG battling, I’m already sold.
If you’re sold too, beware: I’m coming for your cards.
