Patch 1.2 is now live for all players of Elite: Dangerous.
The Wings update, as it’s been called by developer Frontier, allows up to 4 players to team up and form a temporary grouping for missions and combat encounters. The feature has been added by Frontier in order to encourage co-operative play. Of course, you’ll need to find other players first - something which, given the size of the in-game universe, might not be as simple as you might hope.
Thankfully, Frontier has stepped in to make it a little bit easier to find other players. In any given system, you can check your comms list to see a list of all players in your local area and send them a “Wing group invite”. Once in a wing, you’ll be able to see that player’s location anywhere in the galaxy.
One of the reasons you might find it useful to form a Wing is so that other commanders can escort you on a dangerous trading mission. Lightly armed trading ships are an easy target for more unscrupulous players, who like to pull trading vessels out of hyperspace before blowing them to bits and scooping up their precious cargo. Of course, you might want to stick with people you trust - there’s nothing to stop someone breaking up the Wing and turning on their former comrades, and it’s unlikely to be long before some players take advantage of other players’ trust in them.
Once in a wing, the profit from all bounties is shared equally, as are any profits from completed missions and any scanned data - which is pretty handy. However, you’ll still be subject to the laws governing the system you’re in, so you might want to be careful about attacking any clean ships, lest you end up with a bounty on your head.
Brian reviewed Elite: Dangerous and while he enjoyed the ship combat and the stunning visuals, he felt that so far a lack of meaningful content means the game feels as though it was released prematurely, ultimately awarding the game 6/10. “There is a lot of good with Elite, and perhaps in a year after the many planned content patches have been released I’ll revisit it to find a deeper gameplay experience,” Brian wrote in his Elite: Dangerous Review. “but as it stands I have to break up my final opinion between niche fans and the general gaming population. The niche audience will rightly find this game to be a 9 out of 10, with its beautiful graphics and tight flight controls during combat. Where the general audience might be left wanting more once they get their fill of exploration and combat.”
