It isn’t out until next year, but Eidos hasn’t been coy about showing off its upcoming reboot of popular cult series Thief.
The game hasn’t been without controversy; long-term fans have complained about everything from Garret’s new look to what appears to be more action-based gameplay and the implementation of an XP system, but developers Eidos Montreal has made assurances that the game will live up to the series’ legacy.
Thief was a popular trilogy of stealth-em-up games originally created by the now-defunct Looking Glass Studios. You play as Garret, the titular thief, as he skulks about an unnamed city in the search for loot; though he invariably ends up being drawn into the schemes of others. The last installment was Deadly Shadows, released on PC and the original Xbox back in 2004. Deadly Shadows met with similar controversy at the time due to the way in which levels were broken up into discreet areas separated by loading screens - previous games had presented each level as a seamless whole. Despite criticisms though, it has since gone on to become warmly remembered, not least for its excellently creepy mission set around the abandoned orphanage that was Shalebridge Cradle.
Thief is due to be released on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3 and PS4 in February 2014. In the meantime, check out the trailer above.
