EA have revealed an adorable new puzzle platformer entitled Unravel, which is set to come to PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.
A noticably nervous Martin Sahlin, Creative Director at developer Coldwood, discussed his desire to create an emotive experience, describing the main character Yarny as “the red thread that runs through everyone’s lives, tying everything together.”
“The idea of Unravel was created from a very personal place. We didn’t start out by saying we’re going to make a puzzle platforming game. We started by thinking more about our lives, and the things we hold meaningful. We wanted the game to have a heart and the gameplay could always be designed to represent that,” he continued. “The tale of Unravel is about love, and the bonds between people. And the yarn is a representation of that. Yarny’s red thread is the tie that connects everything in the game, from the gameplay mechanics to the story, and the people in it.”
And Unravel does sound like it could be an incredibly emotive experience. Yarny is a cat-like humanoid creature who is made up of a single thread of yarn which unravels as you move, which means that Yarny is literally leaving a piece of himself in his wake wherever he goes. It’s a metaphor.
This may seem like a burden, but Yarny often uses this threads to his advantage, using it to help his swing around, fish, drag items around, fly a kite and even create makeshift trampolines between objects in order to get to hard-to-reach places.
Although a release date for Unravel hasn’t been confirmed yet, there has been some beautiful screenshots released, as well as a trailer which was first showcased at EA’s E3 conference. Check them out below.
