Hockey fans, take note. EA Sports today announced details of the next installment in its long-running NHL series. EA Sports launched the original NHL Hockey for the Sega Genesis back in 1991, and it’s seen annual editions ever since.

NHL 15 will feature a new physics engine, allowing for more realistic puck movement, and collisions between players.

The biggest update to the series by far will be the shift to next-gen consoles, and the greater processing power that allows. EA Sports was quick to point out that NHL 15 will run on the same engine as EA Sports UFC. Whereas that game will only be available on Xbox One and Playstation 4, however, NHL 15 will also be available on the Xbox 360 and Playstation 3, perhaps by way of consolation to fans that are not yet ready to upgrade.

The game will also purportedly feature a new AI system that will allow NPC’s to anticipate passes, and “read and react to potential plays.”

Unfortunately, the game’s evocative teaser does not feature any gameplay, so we have not seen a demonstration of the new AI as of yet.

The player featured on the game’s cover will be decided by votes cast by fans on EA’s website and twitter.

NHL 15’s release date is TBA, but check out the trailer below
