After teasing the game last December, Katamari Damacy and Noby Noby Boy creator Keita Takahashi has unveiled his new PlayStation title: Wattam at this year’s E3.
Developed by indie studio Funomena in collaboration with Sony Studio Santa Monica, Wattam is a game focused on a mayor’s attempt to unite his town after a mysterious explosion caused everyone to drift apart and left them floating in deep space. In order to help reverse the damange caused, the major and other townsfolk are tasked with creating bigger explosions, in order for the citizens to find their way back home. By stacking on top of citizens, this in turn helps to create chain explosions, which helps fill the sky with joy and unlocks new levels for players.
Yep, it’s a Takahashi game alright.
Players can use different characters to discover unique properties that can be interacted with. As you progress, you’ll soon discover there are some characters hidden or asleep, and who can only be unlocked by experimenting. As shown in the trailer below, in one instance players need to interact with a cloud character in order to discover hidden flowers. This sense of discovery appears to serve as the main basis of the game, while the cute visuals and bizarre sense of humor show that there’s little chance Takahashi abandoning his trademark oddness. Not that we want him to, mind - strange little oddities like Wattam are why we love games so much.
Wattam is currently scheduled for release on the PlayStation 4 sometime later this year, though we don’t know precisely when just yet. In the meantime, feel free to check out the official gameplay trailer from E3 below.
