Today, Shigeru Miyamoto made an announcement that few were expecting and many were hoping for: for the first time since 2006, a brand new Star Fox game is in production.

With the currently untitled Wii U project, Miyamoto looks to take full advantage of the console’s GamePad. Judging by what we saw, the game’s dialogue will likely be in the same charming vein as its predecessors.

Interestingly, the game requires the player to pay close attention to both the television screen and the screen on the controller. By default, the television will display the third person spaceship view Star Fox fans are familiar with. The GamePad, on the other hand, will display a motion-sensitive first person view the player will use to take down enemy ships. These views will also be interchangeable at the player’s discretion.

The control scheme may seem a bit clunky, but in an interview with Time, Miyamoto said, “I think Star Fox will be a game [which] you spend a little bit of time getting used to the controls - but once you do, then you’ll understand what’s fun about that experience.”

Like in previous Star Fox games, the Arwing will be able to morph into a tank for land-based adventuring. New to the series, however, is the two-person helicopter; one player will be able to pilot the vehicle and the other will control a small, deployable robot that can plunder and attack enemies on the surface.

While the Wii U’s Star Fox appears to be in the early stages of development, Miyamoto aims to finish the game within a year. This being said, no official release date has been announced - all that’s certain is that Miyamoto is personally leading the project, and that the Star Fox series is getting the revival it deserves.
