If you ever wanted to fight aliens with a group controlled by Abraham Lincoln, then Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. is the game that you have been waiting for.
The new 3DS project is being led by Shigeru Myamoto, and features a steam punk art style with some apparent influence taken from H.P. Lovecraft and Silver Age comics, which is always a good thing. Cel-shading, speech bubbles and bright colors are employed to great effect as you command your squad in an effort to push back the alien hordes.
Code Name: S.T.EA.M (it stands for “Strike Team Eliminating the Alien Menace”, apparently) is being developed by Intelligent Systems, the studio behind the classic Advance Wars series. Described as a turn-based strategy game with some first-person shooter elements, you command a squad of unique individuals, each with their own weapons and skills.
Your team members carry boilers on their back, and the steam they produce is used to power your movement and weapons, so a careful balance between mobility and firepower is essential if you’re to survive each encounter. Success will earn you medals, which can be spent between rounds on either upgrading your equipment or replenishing your health or resources, necessitating some careful decision-making.
We’re big fans of the developer’s previous work, so we’ll be keeping a close eye on Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. over the coming months. In the meantime, check out the roundtable presentation below.
