The Dota 2 “major balance update” the community was promised is in testing, and the patch notes tell us it’s quite lengthy. It’s too early to tell if it will change the dotes in any notable ways, but fans have discovered a reference to the much-missed Terry Pratchett hidden among the details.
One of Dota 2’s new items - 8 have been added in the latest patch - is called the Octarine Core, an item “formed from Mystic Staff and Soul Booster” that reduces cooldowns by 25 per cent, and fortifies intelligence, HP, mana and more. Discworld enthusiasts will know of octarine as the color of magic in Pratchett’s fantasy universe. The Colour of Magic is also the title of the first Discworld novel, originally published all the way back in 1983.
Dota 2 isn’t the only video game to pay tribute to Terry Pratchett, who died at the age of 66 last month following a long battle with Alzheimer’s disease. Elite: Dangerous also paid tribute to the author, adding a Starport to the game named Pratchett’s Disc.
