After the excitement of the reveal of The Taken King at E3, fans have been left with a slightly bitter taste having discovered the $40 price tag and the news that there will be exclusive content on the Collector’s Edition.
This news came from Eurogamer’s interview with Luke Smith, director of The Taken King. Many are commenting that Smith came across quite negatively, causing some fans to question their loyalty to the franchise.
The interview ranged from the general price of the expansion, to the exclusive content for those who buy the Collector’s Edition of Destiny (which contains the base game and all 3 pieces of DLC). Fans are outraged by the decision to put exclusive content onto the Collector’s Edition, due to the fact that they’d have to pay for a game and two pieces of DLC, that they already own, if they wanted to get them. However, Smith had an answer to this
“Eurogamer: I’m not going to buy the game and the two DLCs all over again.
Luke Smith: Okay, but first I want to poke at you on this a little bit.
Eurogamer: Poke at me?
Luke Smith: You’re feeling anxious because you want this exclusive content but you don’t know yet how much you want it. The notion of spending this money is making you anxious, I can see it -
Eurogamer: I do want them. I would buy them -
Luke Smith: If I fired up a video right now and showed you the emotes you would throw money at the screen.”
Many have commented that Smith comes across as arrogant, some even going so far as to say that he appears to be holding the players of Destiny in contempt.
Fans have also questioned the decision to price The Taken King at $40, with the Legendary Edition only costing $14.99 more (which includes the base game and all three pieces of DLC). This essentially means that new players only have to spend $14.99 for the base game and the two other pieces of DLC.
However, it seems that Bungie have been listening, as David “Deej” Dague recently told Forbes that “Year One players won’t get the same perks as people who buy a collector’s edition,” but that “They’ll get something better. Tune into the Weekly Update for more.”
He also posted several longer responses to the Bungie forum in which he further detailed Bungie’s plans to reward year one players.
“I’m catching up on a lot of conversation about The Taken King,” Deej wrote. “Please know that we’re reading this feedback and taking it as seriously - as we always do. Destiny is a great game because we worked together to make it that way over the course of the past year. That partnership has not changed.”
“The real conversation here is: What are we doing to honour you, the players who have been bound to Destiny in this first year of action and adventure? I’m glad you asked. I’m going to answer in the Bungie Weekly Update.”
“Please stay tuned.”
Kyle scored Destiny a mediocre 6/10 in our Destiny review, stating that “Bungie built an amazing and unique universe for us to explore, but filled it with the most uninspired and standard content possible. Everything beyond the aesthetics and mechanics is boring.”
