Bungie has released a video showing off what players can expect from Destiny‘s co-op gameplay.
In the 7-and-a-bit-minute long video, several players infiltrate a large structure in an attempt to recover data from a computer. While they’re waiting for the machine to be hacked, they’re assaulted by a team of The Fallen - an aggressive alien race controlled by the game’s AI. The perspective shifts between the various players throughout, showcasing some of the game’s weapons and character skills. Halo seems to have informed much of the game’s UI and mechanics - no surprise, given that it was Bungie who conceived that series in the first place. Elsewhere, Borderlands-style health bars and critical hit announcements appear above enemies’ heads, while activating special abilities sees the camera zoom out to a third-person perspective.
Destiny is Bungie’s first attempt at moving on from the legacy they built as custodians of the Halo franchise, which is now owned by Microsoft. Bungie, meanwhile, have entered into a publishing deal with Activision. In Destiny, you choose your character class and adventure in a giant open-world filled with aliens, quests and other players. Don’t call it an MMO though - rather than existing on a persistent server, the game matchmakers players on the fly, spawning them in discreetly when you arrive in a new area.
Destiny is set to release this September on PC, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4, with a public beta commencing later this Summer. You can guarantee access to the beta by pre-ordering the game via selected retailers - see the game’s official website for more details.
