Destiny launch nearly triples monthly PlayStation 4 sales

Sony has Destiny to thank for it’s recent boost in PS4 sales. More Playstation 4 consoles were sold in September than in any other month this year (the figure apparently triples the sales of August according to Spike TV’s Geoff Keighley) and Sony reckons it’s because Destiny was so heavily marketed alongside the PS4 and launched with a special white-colored PS4 bundle.

“Destiny broke PlayStation Network sales records across several categories, taking the top spot for pre-orders, day one sales, and week one sales. One month after the game’s launch, engagement among PlayStation fans continues to soar, as Destiny is the most-played title on the PlayStation 4 system with 125 million hours of gameplay”, Sony stated. 125 Million is around five times that of the second most-played title, or anything else on the platform.

This news is actually rather strange if you consider the fact that Destiny sold more physical copies on Xbox One than on PlayStation 4 (according to US numbers company NPD). Perhaps the golden age of digital sales really is alive and thriving as the aforementioned sales don’t include the copies sold in the vastly popular PS4 bundle, as well as digital sales which pushed the PS4 version into the best selling category.

The massive success for Sony in September marks the ninth consecutive month of the PS4 claiming the title of best-selling console in the US this calendar year.

Kyle reviewed Destiny for us back in March, awarding Bungie’s first non-Halo game in over a decade a slightly-above-average 6/10. “Bungie built an amazing and unique universe for us to explore, but filled it with the most uninspired and standard content possible,” he wrote. “It’s a shame. If Bungie could have delivered on even half the promises it made, Destiny could have been something great. Instead, we are left with the skeleton of good game - and not much more.”
