Last weekend saw the conclusion of the Destiny Beta, and today developer Bungie announced that over 4.6 million players took part the Beta across the PlayStation and Xbox console systems. This makes the Destiny Beta the most-played console Beta in history, and marks an astounding achievement for both Bungie and Activision. The Beta originally launched on both the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 on July 17th, with access only available to those with pre-orders or special invite codes, before finally opening up to public testing on the Xbox consoles early last week, in an attempt to do a server stress test.

Thrilled with the numbers and the amount of positive feedback that they’ve received, both Bungie and publisher Activision released a statement to the fans. Eric Hirsberg, the CEO of Activision Publishing, marveled at the feat of hosting such a large console Beta by saying, “Hosting a Beta at this scale is an incredible feat, so we’re thrilled to see the phenomenal response. But the Beta is just a taste of what’s to come. We’re counting down the days to our launch day, September 9th.”

“We were totally blown away by the number of people who played the Beta,” said Pete Parsons, COO of Bungie, while thanking the community. “We surpassed even our own goals and the feedback was invaluable. We cannot thank the community enough; the response was humbling and in the weeks ahead we’ll be working hard to ensure that Destiny lives up to the expectations at launch.”

Destiny is a futuristic first-person shooter where the player takes the role of a newly awakened guardian, set to defend the last city on Earth. It’s at that city that the mysterious Traveler has provided amazing technological advancements and protection against the gathering darkness from the furthest reaches of space. With a stellar cast of voice actors such as Peter Dinklage, Peter Stormare, and Claudia Black, Bungie is sure to be creating a unique and captivating console experience worthy of the next generation of games.

Get ready to explore Mars, the Moon, and other locations when Destiny launches early in September on the PlayStation and Xbox consoles. There is a lot of hype surrounding this game and anyone who has played the Beta first hand would know that it is mostly justified; only time will tell if the finished product will be able to meet expectations.
