Destiny Beta Characters Being Wiped Before Final Release

“Since the beta, we’ve continued to tune and adjust the game. The way you earn experience has been adjusted up and down a bunch of times. Items have been added and removed. New features toggled. Although there’s no single monumental change, the sum of the tweaks leaves characters from the Beta Build in strange shape that would be confusing at best, broken at worst.”

This is the reason Bungie designer Tyson Green gave when officially confirming that any progress made in last month’s Destiny Beta (which attracted 4,638,937 unique players, according to publisher Activision) will be wiped. This means that players wont be able to carry characters and items over into the final version due for release this September. Bungie didn’t comment on whether or not our characters would disappear during the July beta and many of us where hoping to see our characters again rather than starting fresh.

Some players are angered because of the “countless hours” they put into their characters. Studio community manager David Dague countered by saying: “What you just experienced is something we’ve been through countless times here at Bungie. We feel your pain, and then some. Making a game requires iteration and progress. When we reinvent the world where the Guardians live, sometimes we have to leave them behind. This is the last time we’ll ask you to part with your hero,” he added. “On September 9th, you can create a Guardian who will keep you company for a good, long time. On a long-enough timeline, you might decide to delete him or her and start over again - but that will be your call to make.”

However, it’s far from unusual for characters to be wiped before a game leaves Beta and hits retailers; in fact, it’s unusual for them not to be, so these complaints could be seen to be not understanding what Beta testing is all about.

Destiny will be out on the 9th of September and is definitely worth taking a look at, you can find out more in our preview, where Kyle Barrows calls Destiny an ” absolute blast”.
