Deep Silver to acquire Homefront IP

Koch Media, the parent company behind the developer and publisher Deep Silver, has just announced on Twitter that they have acquired the IP rights to the Homefront franchise.

Homefront was previously owned by Crytek, a company in the middle of a financial crisis, with the previous Homefront director resigning amid some very public staff walkouts; last week Crytek issued a public statement saying it had found the capital to “secure” the company’s future, and that staff would finally be paid after months of receiving nothing. They did not comment on where this capital came from.

The previous developer of the upcoming Homefront: The Revolution, Crytek UK, has also been appropriated, fans will be pleased to know. Crytek UK is famous for several iconic franchises, such as TimeSplitters (back when the developer was known as Free Radical Design), as well as the multiplayer modes for Crysis 2, Crysis 3. They also contributed on the Xbox One launch title Ryse: Son of Rome. Crytek UK will henceforth be known as Deep Silver Dambuster Studios.

Koch Media has done this before, picking up the Saints’ Row franchise after Saints’ Row The Third, much to the fear of gamers everywhere, only to release the highly anticipated Saints’ Row 4 with a fair level of success. As a result, the initial Twitter reaction seems positive overall, with fans stating that the franchise will finally get the backing it deserves, after being picked up in 2011 from the previous publisher, THQ.

Homefront: The Revolution is currently slated for release at some point in 2015 for PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One, though whether or not this will be moved remains to be seen; we will keep you posted as updated emerge.
